The Hun School of Princeton seeks a dynamic and knowledgeable Middle School Academic Learning Skills Program Teacher for a position beginning in August 2024.
The Hun School’s Academic Learning Skills Program offers academic and personal management/executive function skills instruction within the context of a college-preparatory curriculum. The program’s goal is to help students with mild learning differences, and ADHD develop the strategies necessary to meet their academic challenges and acquire the needed skills to become independent lifelong learners. The Academic Learning Skills Program (ALSP) provides an individualized curriculum to address each student’s reading, writing, self-advocacy, and study skills to enhance active learning while preparing the student for college. Along with academic and study strategies instruction, the program seeks to monitor the ALSP student’s progress and provide ongoing collaboration with classroom teachers to address a variety of learning styles to maximize student achievement.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized basic skills instruction, research-based study strategies, and self-advocacy remediation to students one-on-one;
- Analyze and interpret data from psychoeducational reports and write educational plans outlining student strengths, challenges, and suggestions for classroom accommodations;
- Follow individualized learning plans, monitor students' progress with identified learning differences, and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to learning;
- Provide teachers with materials and guidance to support and accommodate different learning styles;
- Collaborate and maintain active communication with classroom teachers, parents, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality;
- Take part in professional development opportunities;
- Potentially mentor an Advisory Family of 9 middle-schoolers, acting as their advisor and their family’s point person between school and home, delivering the Middle School’s advisory curriculum;
- Teach one section of 6th grade Study Skills, which meets 6 times in every 8-day rotation;
- Run the after-school Learning Lab, Monday-Thursday, from 3:15-4:15 pm.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in special education strongly preferred;
- Minimum three years of successful experience as a special education teacher preferred; experience in an independent school environment a plus;
- Extensive knowledge of disabilities and their impact on student development and learning;
- A love for working with young people;
- A commitment to a diverse and inclusive community;

- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff;
- Personal qualities including flexibility, resilience, approachability, and kindness;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, bringing the maturity necessary to deal with the demands and responsibilities of the position and the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff;
- Demonstrated communication, organization, and management skills;
- Must possess good judgment, tact, sensitivity, and discretion in the handling of confidential information, materials and situations;
- Familiarity or experience with online instruction including the use of Zoom meeting technology;
- A desire to contribute to school life outside of the classroom on a lively boarding school campus.
