JOB DESCRIPTION

Social Studies Teacher

PURPOSE:This position is a highly visible one. The position of Social Studies Teacher requires a commitment to students, excellence, and a relentless drive to achieve extraordinary results. The Social Studies Teacher position was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and laboratory setting; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers; other professional staff, and administration in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues.

REPORTS TO: Principal or his/her designee

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district, and state.
  • NJ Certification(s)
  • Knowledge of relevant technology.
  • Relevant teaching experience.
  • Hold a New Jersey instructional certificate in accordance with the requirements of N.J.S.A. 18A:27.1 and N.J.A.C. Title 6 Chapter 11 with appropriate special education endorsement (N.J.A.C. 6:11-8.3) and other endorsements for the position held (N.J.A.C. 6:11-6.1, 6.2, or 8.1 et seq.)
  • Exhibits a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  • Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Pass the State required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education, or, during the initial six-month period provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches Social Studies and incorporates language skills, writing skills and critical learning procedures, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Trustees.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified in state laws, regulations and district policies.
  • Selects, designs and organizes objectives, strategies and materials for teaching social studies and develops clear and appropriate lesson plans.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the NHCCS.
  • Modify teaching plans according to varying needs of students.
  • To develop and implement an instructional program within his/her classroom in a manner consistent with policies approved by the NJDOE and aligned to State mandates.
  • High degree of knowledge of content-related pedagogy relating to the assignment.
  • Plan and carry out classroom activities focusing attention on basic skills, key concepts and desirable attitudes and values which help the student develop important skills, increase personal competence and will stimulate him/her to be an ethical and sensitive human being.
  • Organize and maintain a pleasant and stimulating classroom environment for learning which provides for individual differences.
  • Provides learning material and language reference books to the students, utilizing available resources in school curriculum to monitor, access, and evaluate student’s learning abilities.
  • The ability to effectively contribute to and manage an individual program plan for students with special needs.
  • The ability to adapt curriculum to meet the varying rates, patterns and needs of all students including students who extend learning beyond designated outcomes.
  • The ability to effectively utilize available technologies
  • Confer with parents and students in a cooperative effort to understand the student and to encourage his/her progress.
  • Take adequate measures to insure the health, safety and welfare of students.
  • Continually appraise student progress using subjective and objective criteria for evaluation.
  • Take part in curriculum planning to improve the educational program of the school and school system, devoting particular attention to the improvement of learning opportunities in his/her assignment.
  • Develop a working relationship with all members of the faculty and other personnel assigned to the school.
  • Be willing to participate in activities that increase one’s professional competence.
  • Implementing and delivering quality instruction to students and executing the instructional program by demanding higher order thinking activities from students in a progressive manner.
  • Establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with students, parents, and other working staff members, managing the students’ behavior in the classroom and the school premises, and implementing appropriate behavior management program.
  • Keep informed about school policies and procedures and assist in their development or, revision when the need arises.
  • Keep prescribed records for such things as student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records, and documents required by the School Board or Department of Education up to date, legible and accurate and make wise and discriminate use of such records.
  • Developing the instructional program pertaining to the current educational trends and updating their knowledge on latest research based educational developments.
  • Join and support professional organizations to further their own development and that of the profession.
  • Report and interpret to the student and his/her parents on a regular basis the student’s academic progress and achievement.
  • Maintaining the students’ progress reports, identifying areas of weakness in the student for their overall improvement in studying habits, behavioral issues, and organizational skills.
  • Assume other related responsibilities and duties within the context of the above major responsibilities and/or illustrations of key duties.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a 10-month full-time position that is annually renewable in accordance to New Horizons Community approved policies and procedures. The typical work day is from 7:40 AM to 3:40 PM.

COMPENSATION: Salary recommended by the Chief School Administrator and established by the Board of Trustees.

EVALUATION:Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy.
