Glassboro Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates in the capacity of an ESL Teacher. This position is responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

QUALIFICATIONS: New Jersey Teaching Certificate in English as a Second Language. Knowledge of techniques for teaching English, ability to conduct appropriate assessments for program placement and monitoring student achievement; Native or near-native proficiency in all the skills understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English; Excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in working in multicultural environment.

REPORTS TO: Chief Academic Officer

JOB GOAL/MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

The primary purpose of the ESL Teacher is to accelerate the student’s learning or acquisition of the English language. ESL Teacher also serves as a liaison between the student, other classroom teachers and their families. The main goal is to implement ESL procedures in accordance with the Glassboro Board of Education policies following the State/Federal guidelines. The ESL instructor will provide the student(s) with the necessary skills to become proficient in English through grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

  1. Prepare materials for class activities.
  1. Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  1. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects; communicate those objectives to students.
  1. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program instruction, demonstration and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate.
  1. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  1. Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  1. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ needs, abilities, and interests.
  1. Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws or administrative policies.
  1. Serve as a liaison between the ESL student, his/her family and the teachers involved in educating the student.
  1. Provide cross cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships.
  1. Monitor ESL Students’ progress in all aspects of his/her academic schedule and their participation in all school activities and programs.
  1. To be knowledgeable of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  1. To be knowledgeable of the principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups.
  1. Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  1. Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintaining them over time.
  1. Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and remain professional in all situations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a ten (10) month position with salary and contract terms to be negotiated with the Superintendent and the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance in this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
