The Pittsgrove Township School District, Salem County, NJ, a K-12 district, is seeking a
Principal for its Pittsgrove Township Middle School, housing grades 5-8, approximately
500 students and 45 certificated staff.
NJ Principal certification required. Demonstrated success with curriculum, staff
evaluation, technology, and fiscal management. Two years experience as an
administrator or supervisor with a minimum of five years teaching experience required,

JOB DESCRIPTION:
TITLE: PRINCIPAL
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master's Degree from accredited college or university;
2. New Jersey Certificate – Principal;
3. A minimum of five years teaching experience;
4. A minimum of two years administrative experience (administrator and/or
supervisor);
5. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S.
citizenship or legal resident alien status.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
JOB GOAL: To provide leadership, supervision, and coordination to the total
educational program with the grade structure assigned.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Program
a. Coordinate services of Guidance, Health and Media Specialist and student
attendance.
b. Exercise leadership in school-level planning for improvement of instruction.
c. Supervise curriculum evaluation to insure a standard of excellence.
d. Coordinate the development and implementation of curriculum with the Chief
Academic Officer.
e. Assist in the selection of appropriate instructional materials and monitor delivery of
the instructional program.
f. Meet periodically with department/grade level leaders, the student focus groups,
and the Superintendent to assist in curriculum evaluation.
g. Supervise instruction and assist teachers in improvement of their instructional
techniques.
h. Consult regularly with the supportive administrative/supervisory staff and
coordinate their services so that they may assist classroom teachers most
effectively.
i. Encourage and be responsible for extra-curricular activities. Attend school
programs, functions, and athletic events held to recognize and encourage student
achievement.
j. Assist the Superintendent in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of
annual district program goals.
2. Students
a. Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary in
accordance with board policy and the students’ rights to due process.
b. Responsible for promotion and retention of students.
c. Responsible for conditions and procedures relating to welfare, health, and safety of
students.
d. Exclude from school any pupil who shows departure from normal health, upon the
recommendation of the school physician or school nurse.
e. Report incidents of violence, vandalism, and substance abuse. Ensure the removal
of students in possession of firearms from the general education program and
provide notification as required by law and administrative code. Work
cooperatively with law enforcement authorities in maintaining a safe and drug-free
school environment.
3. Staff
a. Make available to staff members all district policies and regulations that have been
enacted by the Board of Education and Superintendent.
b. Supervise and evaluate professional and office personnel in accordance with state
statute and board policy. Maintain appropriate staff evaluation records.
c. Work in conjunction with the Chief Academic Officer in the development and
implementation of a staff development program.
d. Interview, recommend for appointment, assign, supervise and evaluate the
performance of school employees.
e. Assign professional personnel by taking into account the special abilities of each and
assigning an equitable distribution of the workload.
f. Provide orientation and assistance to new teachers.
g. Monitor staff attendance according to policy and assign suitable teacher coverage as
necessary. Be responsible for the orientation of the substitutes.
4. Administration
a. Assume responsibility for the management and supervision of the school in
accordance with law, administrative code and board policies and regulations.
b. Keep the Superintendent informed of school activities and needs.
c. Make reports to the Superintendent regarding the activities of the school, the
condition of the school, and the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures.
d. Assist the Superintendent, when called upon to do so, in the development of policies
and regulations for staff and students. Assume responsibility for the development
of a staff and student handbook.
e. Prepare rules for the operation of grade levels/departments as assigned that are
consistent with policies and regulations of the Board of Education and
Superintendent of Schools.
f. Enforce district policies, administrative regulations, and school rules.
g. Conduct relevant meetings of staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the
school.
h. Plan and supervise fire and other emergency/security drills as required by law and
board policy.
i. Prepare or supervise the preparation of all reports, records and other paperwork as
required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
j. Coordinate with Supervisor of Maintenance the daily needs of the building.
5. Operations
a. Plan, organize and supervise all curricular and extracurricular activities.
b. Assign administrative coverage for evening and weekend activities.
c. Approve/create master teaching schedule and classroom assignments.
6. Finance
a. Prepare and submit the school’s budget requests and monitors the expenditure of
funds.
b. Ensure the proper collection, safekeeping, and accounting of school activity funds.
c. Approve all requisitions and purchases for the operation of the school program.
7. Public Relations
a. Acquaint staff, students, and parents with the philosophy and objectives of the
Board of Education.
b. Act as a liaison between the school, home and community, interpret policies,
programs and activities; and encourage broad community participation in the
affairs of the school.
c. Assist the Central Office in developing and directing a school-community relations
program and in preparing information to be disseminated to the public.
d. Maintain positive relationships between the school and the community.
8. Professional
a. Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending
professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications and
discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
b. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months. Salary to be determined by Board.
