The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Deputy Superintendent within the Office of the Superintendent.


DEFINITION:
Newark Board of Education is committed to ensuring exemplary leadership at every one of its schools. To achieve this goal, the Deputy Superintendent will work to manage Assistant Superintendents with the tools and resources to set and attain ambitious outcomes within a school division, across Teaching and Learning, and Support Services. They will be charged with the mission-critical task of inspiring, providing thought-partnership, coaching, and holding Assistant Superintendents and school support teams accountable to the vision that all of their schools and departments are making dramatic progress on their academic, college and career goals. This is an exciting opportunity for leaders with the right skills and experiences to have a lasting impact on all of Newark Public Schools’ students and their schools.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A minimum of ten years of professional experience, with an outstanding track record as a district leader (or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  2. Significant experience as an instructional leader elevating student achievement in an urban setting.
  3. Master’s degree in education or related field required.
  4. Demonstrated ability to improve student achievement
  5. School Administrator Certificate/Provisional Certificate

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Deputy Superintendent’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Coach Assistant Superintendents in goal setting and planning, including:
    • Working with them to establish specific, targeted school and department performance goals and create plans for curriculum, assessment, instructional practice, and professional development
    • Providing them with the support and resources they need to create cultures of high expectations and systems for operational excellence within the areas they supervise;
  • Supervise and evaluate a high performing team of instructional and operational experts, including:
    • Managing annual performance review process for Assistant Superintendents, Executive Directors, Special Assistants and Instructional Support Specialists who report directly to them
    • Identify and rewarding strong performance, creating opportunities for professional growth;
    • Documenting progress against goals, flagging and elevating issues as appropriate, ultimately ensuring that their central office team performs at a high level and meet the needs of Newark’s students.
  • Serve on Superintendent’s leadership team, including:
    • Helping to shape, refine, and implement district-wide initiatives in areas such as special education, enrollment, teacher evaluation, and curriculum adoption;
    • Create a collaborative and open communication line between district departments and principals, driving alignment of strategic vision, a shared understanding of challenges at the school level, and identification of opportunities for improved student achievement;
    • Identify areas where adjusting central team’s approach/focus could lead to better student outcomes.

  • Strong knowledge of high-quality instructional practices and the ability to lead others to implement these practices consistently across classrooms, school sites, and departments.
  • Deep knowledge of pedagogy and a proven track record of using data to drive results.
  • Proven ability to serve as a coach and mentor to both senior and mid-level team members, helping staff to develop the skills needed at sustainably high levels.

SALARY RANGE AND EMPLOYMENT PERIOD
Salary Range: Commensurate with background, experience, and education.
Employment Period: Twelve (12) months
