TITLE:  Supervisor of Health Services
 
I.       QUALIFICATIONS: The Supervisor of Health Services shall possess a Standard New Jersey School Nurse Certificate, Master’s degree in educational leadership or related field, and a Supervisor or Principal certification.

II.      POSITION SUMMARY:
 
          The Supervisor of Health Services shall be directly responsible to the Director of Student Support Services for the complete operation of the District’s Health Services program as it relates to both students and staff.  When the Supervisor of Health Services is not on duty, supervisory responsibility lies with the building principal or other appropriate administrator to follow the district’s emergency protocols.
 
III.     JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  1.        Participates in policy and program formulation for the district, involving factors that affect the health of pupils and school personnel.

 

  1.        Develops and implements, with the nursing staff, plans for nursing service consistent with the objectives and resources of the district, changing community needs, current knowledge and techniques in the health services field and the requirement of law.

 

  1.         Directs and coordinates school nurses’ participation in Child Study Team evaluations and placements of students, serves as Health Specialists liaison for the Child Study Teams, responsible for scheduling all medical nursing evaluations for Child Study Team referrals.

 

  1.         Directs the implementation of federal, state and local laws as they relate to health services (i.e. P.E.O.S.H., universal precautions, hepatitis B exposure control plan, regulated medical waste), in conjunction with the Business Administrator, completes and files related reports as required by law.

 

  1.         Reviews all student and staff accident reports and makes recommendations to eliminate hazardous conditions and/or to improve medical/nursing procedures.

 

  1.         Develops procedure for and directs all health related screening programs in the district (i.e. Hearing. Scoliosis, vision, tuberculosis, kindergarten screening, etc.), and submits annual immunization and tuberculosis testing reports for district.

 

  1.         Evaluates the District’s health program and makes progress reports and recommendations regarding the program to the administration, the medical inspector and the Board of education.

 

  1.         In conjunction with the building principal; interviews and recommends selection of the new nursing staff members, recommends the employment of nursing staff adequate to meet the district’s health needs, recommends the assignment, transfers, promotion and separation from service of nursing staff members.

 

  1.          Serves as liaison between the school physicians and the Board of Education.

 

  1. Interviews substitute school nurses.

 

  1. Arranges substitute coverage for school nurses as needed.

 

  1. Confers with building principals, school nurses and school physicians on specific health problems that may arise in the individual school setting.

 

  1. With input from the building principals, supervises and evaluates nursing staff, Student Assistance Counselors, and other related staff members as assigned.

 

  1. Establishes and promotes effective communication between the District and community groups, parents, local health care providers, health and welfare departments and other organizations concerned with the health of students in order to make the best use possible of available resources. Serves as a member of the Wayne Alliance.

 

  1. Coordinates with educational institutions the assignment of professional nursing students for school nursing field experience in the District.

 

  1. Researches and approves purchases and expenditures of health related services supplies and equipment and prepares the health services budget.

 

  1. Evaluates existing health services facilities in the district and recommends improvement as warranted.

 

  1. In conjunction with other appropriate staff members and/or other agencies, develops, implements, and maintains an appropriate record keeping system for all health records.

 

  1. In conjunction with the school nurses, develops and directs the school nurses’ implementation of mandated health related in service and training programs for other district staff members.

 

  1. Develops proficiencies, curriculum guides and related documentation and implements and/or supervises the District wide implementations of a uniform instructional program in all health and health related areas (i.e., health, HIV/AIDS, family life, drugs/alcohol) in the K-5 curricula.

 

  1. Regularly reviews and shares with the nursing staff, books, journals and bulletins relevant to the district’s health program and student care.

 

  1. Plans and schedules physicians and nursing staff for the program of comprehensive physical examinations for students in the school athletic programs.

 

  1. Plans, directs and/or performs such procedures as may be necessary to determine and communicate eligibility of homeless students to tuition-free education in the district.

 

  1. Implements all aspects of the student lunch program, including legal requirements related to student eligibility for free and reduced price meals and/or milk, direct certification, verification and civil rights compliance.

 

  1. As district “504” officer, consults with the Director of Student Support Services and the Supervisor of Special Programs to ensure the implementation of appropriate supports, accommodations, and modifications.

 

  1. Coordinates all aspects of the crisis intervention and crisis prevention programs.

 

  1. Collaborate with the Human Resources Department to oversee Workmen’s Compensations claims and related issues.

 

  1. Manage and implement the district Reasonable Suspicion Drug/Alcohol policies and procedures including the random testing, (voluntary Be Proud program.)

 

  1. Oversees the district’s Wellness and Nutrition policy implementation and procedures.

 

  1. Performs all other duties as designated by the Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Supervision.
