Announcement of Vacancy


The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Per Diem Clerk Typist in Central Office.

Definition
Under supervision, types and also performs routine, repetitive, clerical work of a varied nature; does other related duties as required.

Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Ability to type 40 WPM.
3. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties for this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
4. Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Responsibilities

1. Provide superior customer service to all internal and external stakeholders, including responding to and resolving individual employee and manager inquiries and issues related to civil service status, eligibility and rights.
2. Types technical, scientific, financial, statistical, and other statements, reports, certificates, correspondence, memoranda, payrolls, vouchers, purchase orders, charts, forms, tabulations, bills, warrants, contracts, specifications, case records, manuscripts, and
legal documents from copy, records, cylinders, types, and/or Dictaphone machine.
3. Checks and compares finished copy.
4. Composes and types simple correspondence.
5. Prepares and keeps records.
6. Addresses, stamps, and mails department correspondence.
7. Operates numbering, time, stamping, and dating machines.
8. Hand stamps letters, papers, and other documents, and sorts/files, cards, letters, and forms.
9. Fills in and checks for letters, circular letters, and forms.
10. Provides information according to department regulations in person and by telephone.
11. Answers the telephone and takes messages accurately.
12. Maintains mailing lists.
13. Assists in locating and compiling data for reports.
14. Compiles and tabulates simple numerical data.
15. Operates office machines and equipment, including electric typewriters, copiers, and calculators as required.
16. Maintains essential records and files.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of New Jersey Civil Service Commission’s procedural rules and legislation (preferred)
2. Understanding of grievance procedures and policies (preferred).
3. Knowledge of office methods, practices, routines, and equipment.
4. Ability to understand, remember and carry out verbal/written directions to learn quickly from verbal/written explanations and from demonstrations.
5. Ability to do typing from varied types of copy.
6. Ability to use and care for office machines and equipment including but not limited to electric typewriters, copiers, and calculators.
7. Ability to maintain records and files.
8. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Salary, Terms & Affiliation

1. Salary: The hourly range for this position is $ 16.70.
2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) months
3. Union Affiliation: Local 617 Bargining Unit
