Description Title:               Paraprofessional/Special Education Aide
 
Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma
  2. Minimum experience as determined by the Board.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with students and school staff.
  4. Knowledge of child growth and development, appropriate classroom practices and diverse needs of children with disabilities.
  5. Sensitive to the needs of at-risk children.
  6. Required criminal history check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
 
Reports To:    Certified classroom teacher, principal/director of special services, Lead BCBA, Supervisor of Special Projects and teacher/related service personnel.
 
Job Goal:
  • To promote the achievement of students’ educational goals and learning objectives by providing supplementary instruction and support, enhancements to the physical classroom environment and clerical services to assist the classroom teacher.
 
  • To assist the classroom teacher by working with individual and/or small groups of students to provide them with support as needed to gain optimum benefit from the district’s special education program.
 
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Assists with individualized instruction and works with small groups or individual students under the supervision of the special education teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in implementing the students’ goals as set by the IEP.
  • Assists general education teachers and special education teachers in the implementation of special learning strategies and/or behavioral modifications based on understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
  • Assists the teacher in implementing behavior management systems.
  • Uses reinforcement and prompting techniques to manage student behavior
  • Serves as a chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Assists, where appropriate, in escorting children to arrival/departure areas, loading and unloading the special education student(s) from transportation buses or vans.
  • Completes duties as assigned by the special education classroom teacher to make enhancements to the classroom environment
  • Completes clerical duties, such as collecting behavioral data and helping to maintain individual records for each child.
  • Refers parent requests for information to the classroom teacher.
  • Assists students with various projects, daily living skills (including toileting) and curriculum tasks.
  • Helps students to master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining neat work and study areas.
  • Assists with the supervision of children during emergency drills, assemblies, field trips and play periods.
  • Assists in escorting children from one area to another.
  • Assists in playground supervision.
  • Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  • Assists during eating periods. Fosters good eating habits and table manners in children.
  • Engages children in conversation to encourage language development.
  • Assists students with physical limitations to function as independently as possible in the school setting.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with district policy, and handbook.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information, documents, communications, incidents, etc., with discretion and in a conscientious manner.
  • Participates in staff meetings, professional development and training sessions as assigned. 
  • Utilizes crisis prevention techniques when necessary
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the special education teacher or building principal directly related to a positive learning experience for students with special needs.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered according to policy.
