The Hun School of Princeton seeks a dynamic and creative Upper School Science (Physics) Teacher for a position beginning in August 2023. The ability to teach AP Physics 1 is a requirement of the position, and we would welcome candidates who also have the ability to teach other physical sciences courses.
Science, the study of the natural world, provides a sense of order and wonder in the universe. The science curriculum at Hun focuses on the process, practice, and skills of science comprehension by teaching inquiry and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to express curiosity about our world through an appreciation of the simplicity and complexity of science. Our program relies on creativity, open-mindedness, inquisitiveness, and healthy skepticism. Developments in the STEM field, such as nuclear energy, genetic engineering, and organ transplants, result in complex social issues that must be intelligently addressed. As a result, students need to have a clear understanding of science and its methods. Laboratory investigations are included in all science courses in order to engage students in the exploration of questions about the natural world. Guest speakers, fieldwork, and experiential learning enrich the curriculum and encourage the development of peer collaboration and critical thinking skills that allow students to assess the benefits and risks inherent in modern technology. There are many open avenues of communication in our classes so that ideas are shared and possible consequences of various courses of action are thought through. The primary goal of the science department is to help our students develop a capacity for lifelong learning, as we encourage them to think critically and independently and to continue to be scientifically informed citizens who will be active participants in the global community.
Responsibilities:
- Four (4) sections of Physics classes;
- Team teaching in our annual NextTerm minimester;
- Serving as an advisor in our advisory program;
- Continuous professional growth in the content area;
- Contributions to Hun community life beyond the classroom in roles that could include serving as an advisor, and in future years, coaching a sport, directing a co-curricular activity, or living on campus as a dorm parent (if the opportunity presents itself).
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred;
- Three years of full-time teaching experience is preferred, but other relevant experience will certainly be considered;
- Expertise in the Physical Sciences is essential;
- A love for working with young people;
- A commitment to a diverse and inclusive community;
- A passion for teaching in an innovative, experiential, and student-centered environment;
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff;
- Personal qualities including resilience, approachability, and kindness;
- Excellent technology skills and experience integrating technology into the curriculum;
- A desire to contribute to school life outside of the classroom on a lively boarding school campus.
