Substitute Teacher Job Description

Title: Substitute Teacher

Reports to: School Principal or Designee

Qualifications:

  1. A valid New Jersey teaching certificate or a substitute teacher’s certificate (minimum of 60 college credits)
  2. Demonstrates familiarity with district philosophy, programs, and policies
  3. Ability to work with children and communicate effectively
  4. Possess basic technological skills as required by the position
  5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and through written expression
  6. Must complete required health examination(s) and immunization(s)
  7. Must pass required criminal history background check
  8. Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident status

  2. Establish a positive rapport with pupils, guide pupils so that they develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a foundation for continued growth

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for the safety and well-being of students
  2. Uphold and enforce school rules, Board policies, and federal/state laws
  3. Communicate professionally within the school community
  4. Reports to the Principal designee at least fifteen (15) minutes before the official school opening
  5. Review with the Principal and/or designee all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day
  6. Follows teacher’s schedule and lesson plans as assigned
  7. Assumes responsibility for supervising pupil behavior in class and during other assigned periods
  8. Demonstrates skill in organizing classroom activities
  9. Cooperates in a professional manner with all building staff. Writes a report at the end of the day about work completed and leaves it for the regular classroom teacher with a copy to the Principal
  10. Remains in the building until official school closing for teachers
  11. Reports to the building Principal designee at the completion of the teaching day
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or his/her designees

Environmental Demands:

  1. Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions
  2. Exposure to both heated/air conditioned and non-climate controlled environments
  3. Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment
  4. Potential exposure to a variety of childhood and adult illnesses
  5. Exposure to a workplace that is usually quiet, but can be noisy at times

Terms of Employment: Per Diem rates currently established by the Pinelands Regional Board of Education

Salary: Salary to be determined by the Board of Education

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated as needed in accordance with state law and the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation
