MISSION:

An energetic social studies teacher whose responsibilities include teaching elements of history, geography, politics, economics, religion, and culture to students. You should keep abreast of current events and initiate spirited, respectful debates amongst students.  To be successful as a social studies teacher, you should demonstrate passion and commitment to your discipline.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A New Jersey Department of Education Social Studies Certificate, Certificate of Eligibility (CE), or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS).

THE ROLE:

  • Teaches courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science or humanities to students utilizing the course of study adopted by the District and other appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
  • Develops lesson plans to teach a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, and achieve improved interpersonal relationships.
  • Provides opportunities, when needed, for individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American governmental and economic system and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
  • Makes current material from the mass media available to students; plans and guides discussions of current problems against the background of geographical environment and history of the area being studied.
  • Develops an understanding of the contributions of racial, and political groups to American culture.
  • Develops knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education and living standards.
  • Encourages students to become aware of the complexity and inter-relations of local, state, national and world problems.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress in social studies knowledge and skills.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids and supplies; maintains required inventory records.
  • Supervise daily and check homework, ensure students’ academic progress and serve as a primary point of contact for parents.
  • Regularly assess student mastery of key skills and concepts and use this data to differentiate instruction to meet student needs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator(s) to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

  • Salary range: BA $61,912 - $86,912 / MA 62,412 - 87,412
  • Term of Employment: 10.5 Months
  • Union: MPTEA
