Term of Employment
10 months (September-June)

Salary: 

Salary determined by the GEHR Board of Education and commensurate with experience.

Job Goal: 
The School Social Worker provides the appropriate interventions for students in need of personal, social, emotional·or environmental support to aid in adjusting to and thriving in the school environment. The Social Worker functions as a member of the Child Study Team, fostering collaborative and supportive relationships with educators, community resources,  parents and students to enhance student well-being.
 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work or a related area from an accredited college or university.

License/Certification:

  • Valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate and School Social Worker Endorsement

  • Successful completion of required criminal history review background check and sexual misconduct/child abuse disclosure process

  • Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status

Experience:

  • Experience working as a social worker, preferably in an educational or youth-focused setting.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and services available to students and families.

  • Experience conducting social history evaluations and producing comprehensive reports.

  • Familiarity with the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.

  • Proficiency in providing individual and group counseling services to students dealing with social, emotional, and behavioral issues.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, parents, and community agencies to support student well-being.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and maintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

  • Experience in crisis intervention and providing support to students and families during difficult situations.

  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards governing social work practice in educational settings.

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated on best practices in school social work.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assignment Preparation:

  • Ensures information on community services is readily available to parents and students through pamphlets, brochures, and contact lists of relevant agencies.

  • Maintains an optimal office environment conducive to counseling sessions, ensuring appropriate lighting, ventilation, and confidentiality.

  • Follows district policy in obtaining parental approval for counseling sessions, obtaining consent for ongoing cases and reaching out to parents in crisis situations.

  • Keeps meticulous records including maintaining an appointment calendar, securely filing social history reports, and maintaining confidentiality of special education files.

  1. Social History Evaluations:

  • Establishes rapport with parents and students to facilitate cooperation.

  • Ensures all necessary components of social history are gathered, considering factors like developmental history, family dynamics, socio-economics, and cultural influences.

  • Produces comprehensive and well-written social history reports, elaborating on the influence of home and community issues on school adjustment and providing relevant recommendations for remediation.

  1. IEP:

  • Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for assigned students, ensuring all required components are included and utilizing the computerized IEP program effectively.

  • Participates cooperatively in IEP meetings offering productive input for student's IEPs and ensuring structured and well-organized sessions.

  1. Counseling Services:

  • Provides individual and group counseling to special education students, establishing rapport to facilitate a positive counseling relationship and utilizing counseling skills to aid in social/emotional adjustment.

  1. Staff and Parent Engagement:

  • Offers consultations to teachers, counselors, and administrators upon request, discussing home or community influences and social/emotional adjustment problems, and offering suggestions for improved student adjustment.

  • Provides consultation to parents when appropriate, advising them on their child's adjustment problems, making suggestions for improvement, and making referrals to community agencies and mental health practitioners as needed.

  1. Intervention:

  • Performs all duties required as a member of the Child Study Team including case management duties for assigned students in accordance with New Jersey Administrative Code, state and federal laws.

  • Gathers feedback on student adjustment from parents, staff, and students, making program changes as necessary and providing relevant input at IEP meetings.

  1. Professionalism and Communication:

  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors, maintaining confidentiality and positive professional interactions.

  • Implements and updates the Professional Improvement Plan, meets deadlines, carries out activities, and stays abreast of current research in the field.

  • Completes all assignments punctually and reliably, contributing ideas for department, school, and district improvement through appropriate channels.

  1. Relationship Building:

  • Cultivates an atmosphere of mutual respect with students, maintaining open communication and promoting courtesy.

  • Maintains professional relationships with parents, dealing with them courteously, encouraging them to seek social work services as needed.

  • Maintains professional relationships with community agencies and private practitioners, collaborating effectively.

  • Shares information cooperatively with other school districts, ensuring smooth transitions for transferring students and facilitating collaboration with external placements.
