Harrison Township School District has an opening for a full-time Special Education Classroom Aide to support special education studentsllll across classroom settings.  Position available September 2024.

Qualified candidate must possess a minimum of 60 (sixty) hours of college credit and NJ Substitute Teacher Certification. The candidate will also have knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.

The Special Education (Classroom) Aide’s primary responsibility is to assist the Teacher of the Handicapped.  The Instructional Assistant is directly responsible to the Supervisor of Special Services in regard to any and all contact with student identified as eligible for special education and related services.  The Special Education Teacher Assistant is responsible to the classroom teacher to whom he or she is assigned in regard to classroom assistance.

Qualifications:  The minimum educational requirement for this position will be 60 (sixty) hours of college credit, and Aide must be of good moral character:

  1.   New Jersey Substitute Teacher Certificate
  2.   Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics (or, as appropriate, pre-academic skills).
  3.   A person of good moral character.


The responsibilities include the following:

 Relationship to the Supervisor of Student Services:

A. The Special Education Teacher Assistant will be supervised and evaluated by the Supervisor of Special Services in accordance to N.J.A.C. 6:28-4.1(f).

B. Participate in periodic meetings as convened by the Supervisor of Special Services.

 Relationship to the Teacher of the Handicapped:

A.  Assist the classroom teacher with non-instructional classroom responsibilities and instructional responsibilities with individual students and/or groups. These responsibilities include, the following:

B.  Perform clerical and organizational tasks

  1. Assist in preparing instructional materials
  2. Monitor student behavior during non-instructional periods     
  3. Assist with supervision during meals and snacks
  4. Provide specific personal care for students (e.g., restroom use, feeding, repositioning, sensory diet).
  5. Observe, record and chart students’ behavioral responses
  6. Model good effort, communications and behavior. Implement behavioral plans
  7. Assist with use of assistive technology
  8. Assist with full-class instruction
  9. Assist with individualized class instruction
  10. Implement and reinforce teacher-developed instruction
  11. Assist students with disabilities become more interdependent with peers
  12. Contribute ideas and suggestions in regard to positive behavior support, accommodations and modifications
  13. Participate in team meetings

  C. Assume responsibility as classroom teacher in the absence of the Teacher of the Handicapped.

 Relationship to Students With Special Needs:

A.  Assist students with special needs with instructional tasks as deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher.

B.  Supervise students with special needed during non-instructional periods.


Evaluation:  The performance of duties shall be evaluated by the Director of Student Services.
