Job Title: 

Certified School Nurse

Reports to: 

Director of Special Services and Athletic Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

No supervisory responsibilities.

Term of Employment: 

10 months (September-June)

Salary: 

Salary determined by the GEHR Board of Education and commensurate with experience.

Job Goal: 

The School Nurse is responsible for carrying out the goals for the school health program and is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of students, staff, and the school community. They strive to create a safe and nurturing environment that enhances learning and academic success by providing quality health services, promoting health education, and helping to address health-related issues effectively. The School Nurse works to ensure that all students have access to the care they need to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally in the school setting.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Nursing.

License/Certification:

  • NJ School Nurse (Instructional) certificate or NJ School Nurse (Non Instructional) certificate required.

  • NJ Registered Nurse license required.

  • CPR and AED certificate required.

  • Successful completion of required criminal history review background check and sexual misconduct/child abuse disclosure process.

  • Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably in pediatric or adolescent care.

  • Familiarity with school health services, including conducting physical examinations, immunizations, and health screenings.

  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to student health and safety, including immunization requirements and student health records.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school administration, teachers, parents, and community healthcare providers.

  • Experience in managing and maintaining health records for students, including confidential information and medical histories.

  • Proficiency in providing first aid and emergency care to students in school settings.

  • Understanding of health education principles and ability to communicate health-related information to students, staff, and parents.

  • Experience in conducting health assessments and developing individualized health plans for students with chronic illnesses or special healthcare needs.

  • Familiarity with the implementation of policies and procedures related to student health, including medication administration and management of communicable diseases.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote student wellness and safety within the school environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Health Needs Planning:

  • Collaborates with administration and staff to develop comprehensive health program plans.

  • Coordinates and schedules health examinations and screenings in conjunction with administration and staff.

  • Conducts health assessments and develops individualized health plans for students with chronic illnesses or special healthcare needs.

  1. Preparation and Assessment:

  • Conducts regular assessments of the school building for potential health hazards.

  • Provides guidance to administration and teachers on health-related concerns, especially concerning student health screenings.

  • Ensures the health suite environment meets safety and sanitation standards.

  • Maintains an inventory of specialized resources, supplies, and equipment necessary for health-related emergencies and procedures, including ensuring AED pads are ordered and up to date. 

  1. Execution of Health Objectives:

  • Administer school health services, including physical exams and screenings for hearing, vision, and scoliosis.

  • Works with a certified trainer to ensure athletes have clearance to participate in athletics. 

  • Identify students in need of dental and medical care and facilitate appropriate referrals.

  • Advise the principal on the care of students experiencing injuries or medical emergencies.

  • Conduct regular student health observations to identify and address health needs promptly.

  • Enforce school policies regarding student exclusion, readmission, and immunization requirements.

  • Foster positive relationships with students to support their health and well-being.

  • Communicate pertinent medical and health information to parents, school personnel, and relevant external agencies as needed.

  1. Health Program Review:

  • Follow up on student referrals to assess the effectiveness of provided treatments or interventions.

  • Provide recommendations for adjustments to educational and health programs to better address student needs across the school.

  1. Record Maintenance:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all students under care.

  • Prepare and submit reports on student health status and program activities to the school administration and central office.

  • Ensures timely completion of all mandatory state, local, and federal documentation and reporting.

  1. Continuous Improvement:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development by seeking out opportunities for skill enhancement.

  • Welcome and implement suggestions and feedback to improve job performance.

  • Actively engage in Board-sponsored professional development activities and training sessions.

  1. Collaboration:

  • Fulfill assigned responsibilities effectively and efficiently.

  • Attend and actively contribute to staff meetings to stay informed and engaged in school health initiatives.

  • Monitor student behavior and ensure a safe and supportive environment within the school premises.

  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents and community agencies to address health-related concerns and promote student well-being.
