TITLE: B-403 - Principal - Secondary
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

REPORTS TO:
Director of Secondary Education
JOB GOAL:
To provide leadership to the end that the educational program functions efficiently in providing the best possible education to the children it serves. To exercise full responsibility for the organization and administration of all activities, personnel and physical facilities involved in the educational program in the building. The Principal observes and supervises all staff members, full time or part time, certified and non-certified, at the assigned site. The Principal may be aided in evaluation of staff members by other district personnel who have district wide responsibilities in specific subject areas or programs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Principal has overall and ultimate responsibility for the administration, supervision and curriculum in the school. The Principal may delegate functions as necessary and appropriate.
A. Educational Program

Makes decisions regarding matters of school policy and practice.

Serves on district committees as requested by the Assistant Superintendent and or the Director of Secondary Education.

Works collaboratively with the appropriate staff members to select instruction materials.
-
Exercises leadership in developing and evaluating the curriculum program of the school.

Shares in the development of system-wide curriculum policies.
-
Assumes responsibility for the welfare of students.
-
Oversees and manages student behavior utilizing district policies and regulations.
-
Certifies students for graduation.
-
Assumes general responsibility for the graduation program.
-
Develops and supervises the in-service and professional development days for staff members.
-
Supervises, counsels and supports personnel.
-
Provides adequate reports to parents on the progress of the students.
-
When applicable, works collaboratively with the athletic director to support the school’s athletic and extracurricular programs.

Establishes effective communication with students.
-
Works collaboratively with the appropriate staff members to develop a master schedule that supports the student population.
-
Reviews local and state level data to evaluate the needs of the school.
-
Appraises and evaluates the procedure in the school and makes recommendations to the Director of Secondary Education for consideration.

Keeps the school board informed, through the Director of Secondary Education, of the total school program, including extra curricular activities.
B. Personnel Services
-
Observes and supervises all staff members, full time or part time, certified and non-certified, at the assigned site. The Principal may be aided in evaluation of staff members by vice principals and other district personnel who have districtwide responsibilities in specific subject areas or programs.

Makes or confirms all teaching and activity assignments.

Participates in selection and retention of all staff personnel.

Assigns, supervises and evaluates building personnel.
-
Encourages all staff members to participate in the administration of the educational program.
-
Practices guidance and leadership of staff in matters of morale.
-
Counsels personnel.
-
Plans and leads faculty meetings.
-
Assumes leadership of the principal's cabinet, composed of assistant principals.
-
Acts as liaison between building personnel and district.
-
Orients new staff members and substitute teachers.
-
Promotes professional growth of teachers.
-
Maintains a file of pertinent factual records of personnel.
-
Visits classrooms for classroom observation.
-
Supervises the inservice training program in the building.
-
Interprets policies set by the school board to building personnel and to students.
-
Coordinates activities of departments, areas and groups to promote efficiency and harmony.
-
Promotion of effective communication and interaction between the nursing staff and other departments and/or staff members in the school.

In conjunction with the School Nurse Supervisor, interviews and recommends the selection of new nursing staff members; recommends the employment of nursing staff adequate to meet the District’s health needs; recommends the assignment, transfer, promotion and separation from service of nursing staff members.

Provides input to the School Nurse Supervisor with regard to the supervision and evaluation of the performance of nursing staff members.
C. Community Relations
-
Works with the P.T.O. and other lay groups.

Confers with parents and other citizens.
-
Develops procedures for reporting pupil progress to parents and supervises the reporting process.

Makes decisions regarding the participation of organized school groups in non-school activities in consultation with the directors or advisors of such groups.

Leads building personnel in public relations activities.
-
Publicizes and interprets school policy and practice.
-
Serves as liaison between visitors to the building and school personnel.
-
Verifies the accuracy and effect of releases to the press pertaining to school activities.
-
Oversees the functioning of the school website and social media feed.
-
Represents the school at community, student and/or evening events.
D. Funds and Facilities
-
Prepares the school budget request.
-
Manages and allocates the budget appropriation.
-
Schedules the use of facilities and equipment.
-
Supervises the operation and maintenance of the building and grounds.
-
Shares in supervision of the building transportation program.
-
Shares in the control of pupil behavior on buses.
-
Coordinates plans for alterations and additions to the building.
-
Distributes and inventory supplies and equipment.
-
Verifies the accuracy of pupil attendance and accounting.
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed and directed by the Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendent, and/or the Director of Secondary Education.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education. This position is part of the Wayne Township Administrators’ Association.
ANNUAL EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on the evaluation of certificated staff.
