Position Overview

Thrive Charter School is seeking a highly motivated and student-centered Long-Term Substitute Teacher for High School English. This position requires an individual who can step into an established classroom environment and provide consistent, high-quality instruction aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The selected candidate will play a critical role in maintaining continuity of instruction, supporting student achievement, and fostering a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom culture.


Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction to high school students (grades 9–12).
  • Implement existing curriculum, including literature analysis, writing instruction, grammar, and vocabulary development.
  • Facilitate reading and discussion of a variety of texts, including novels, informational texts, and primary sources.
  • Support students in developing critical thinking, analytical writing, and communication skills.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including direct instruction, small group work, and student-led discussions.
  • Integrate technology and data-driven practices to enhance student learning.

Classroom Environment & Culture

  • Establish and maintain a structured, safe, and respectful classroom environment aligned with Thrive Charter School’s expectations for climate and culture.
  • Promote positive student behavior through clear expectations, consistency, and relationship-building.
  • Foster a classroom culture that encourages student voice, engagement, and collaboration.
  • Support students’ social-emotional development alongside academic growth.

Assessment & Data Use

  • Administer and grade essays, projects, quizzes, and assessments in a timely manner.
  • Provide meaningful, constructive feedback to support student growth in reading and writing.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction to meet individual learning needs.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, and administration to support all learners, including students with IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives when applicable.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading records, and lesson documentation.
  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and flexibility throughout the assignment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (English, Education, or related field preferred).
  • Valid NJ teaching certification preferred (or eligibility for substitute teaching in NJ).
  • Prior experience teaching or working with high school students strongly preferred.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to an existing curriculum and classroom structure.
