To provide leadership in the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction and assessment to ensure that all students meet and exceed the New Jersey Department of Education’s academic standards. Achieving excellence requires that the Assistant Superintendent works collaboratively to lead and nurture members of the staff and communicate effectively with parents, staff, administrators, and members of the community. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, curriculum development, program evaluation, personnel management and financial management.

Job Summary:
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of a standards based curriculum in all subject areas.
  • Develop an assessment plan that monitors the progress of students at regular intervals throughout the school year.
  • Evaluate with content administrators, principals, and teachers the success of programs and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Create the professional development plan for the school year that focuses on district goals.
  • Prepare a detailed analysis of standardized test results along with a plan to correct deficiencies and build upon achievements.
Qualifications:
  • Hold a New Jersey School Administrator Certification
  • Hold a New Jersey Principal Certification
  • Hold a New Jersey Teacher Certification
  • Hold a Master's Degree with course work in curriculum
  • Have a minimum of three years of successful experience as a teacher
  • Have a minimum of four years of successful experience as principal
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate people  
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary 
  • Demonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative
Reports To:  Superintendent of Schools

Supervises:  All Supervisors and Director of Athletics/Health and Physical Education

Responsibilities:
  1. Prepare a detailed analysis of standardized test results along with a plan to correct deficiencies and build upon achievements.
  2. Monitor the integration of all aspects of the New Jersey academic standards throughout the curriculum.
  3. Develop and monitors the implementation of a standards based curriculum in all subject areas.
  4. Organize a district curriculum to examine curriculum articulation and integration.
  5. Keep abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction, and furnishes leadership in determining the appropriateness for inclusion in the district educational program.
  6. Assume a leadership role in developing curriculum for any course newly mandated by the legislature or the State Board of Education.
  7. Direct the implementation of any State-directed program alterations.
  8. Consult with content administrators, principals, and teachers in selection of curriculum materials.
  9. Provide for proper articulation and communication of the curriculum among the schools.
  10. Develop an assessment plan that monitors the progress of students at regular intervals throughout the school year.
  11. Create the professional development plan for the school year that focuses on district goals.
  12. Assist in the development of workshops, new teacher orientation programs and in-service training.
  13. Participate in the selection of teachers, supervisors, and administrators in all schools.
  14. Create the monthly curriculum agenda for the Board of Education meeting.
  15. Approve all academic field trip requests.
  16. Approve all professional development requests from teachers, supervisors, and administrator
  17. Coordinate the creation of the annual Uniform Grading Profile and Assessment Handbook.
  18. Meet with department chairpersons at the secondary level, as needed, to further the articulation between the junior and senior high schools.
  19. Coordinate the ordering of textbooks, academic supplies, and academic programs for all schools.
  20. Coordinate the ordering of technology supplies, equipment, and programs.
  21. Evaluate with content administrators, principals, and teachers the success of programs and makes recommendations for improvement.
  22. Facilitate the maintenance of an annual High School Program of Studies Guide that reflects graduation requirements, approved courses, academic credit guidelines, and any other pertinent information useful to students and staff.
  23. Evaluate the performance of content administrators and additional administrative personnel as assigned in accordance with law, code and board policy.
  24. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school.  
  25. Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, and demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and pride in the education profession.  
  26. Use effective presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents, and the community, including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals, and articulate and audible speech. 
  27. Perform such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent. 
Terms of Employment:  Twelve (12) Month Tenure Track, Non-Affiliated Position
