Director of Youth Leadership Development

 The North Ward Center, a large not for profit organization in Newark, is seeking a Recreation Director for our Youth Leadership Development Program. Major Responsibilities include managing, directing, supervising, and coordinating various recreational programs throughout the year. Knowledge of principles and methods for developing and implementing a wide variety of recreational activities for children are recommended. Experience in administration of recreation services and supervisory experience is strongly recommended. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, public administration, physical education, or a related field is required. Salary is negotiable and compensatory to experience.

 Position Summary

The program director is responsible for the overall direction and management of the academic, leadership and sports recreation programs. The program director will create and implement year-round programs to ensure that participants have access to sport, recreation, academic and leadership activities.

Job Description

  • Plan, schedule, supervise and lead activities, facilities and volunteers as required.
  • Ensure that programs are delivered according to guidelines and safety requirements.
  • Recruit, train and oversee program leadership, volunteers and coaches, ensuring appropriate credentials and background checks.
  • Oversee program-related registration, sign-in/out procedures and maintain participant records.
  • Manage and develop outside contracts, vendors, and project budgets.
  • Create and post weekly schedules for parents and program leaders involved with each activity.

 Sports & Recreation Program:

  • Quarterly preparation and planning in advance of each athletic season. Work with sanctioning organizations such as The National Little League Association.
  • Familiarity with policies, procedures and rules about sport, recreation, events and competitions.
  • Record information concerning programs, costs, participants, equipment and facility use, and other recordkeeping as necessary. Provide regular reports about programs and opportunities.
  • Ensure recreation facilities are maintained in order to ensure an optimal recreation environment.


  • Experience in Recreation, Education or Physical Education.
  • Bachelors Degree in Physical Education/Recreation or Education required.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, adheres to program rules and regulations, and ensures that planned activities are age-appropriate.
