OFFICE OF DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Architect – Office of Design & Construction for the 2018 - 2019 school year.
NOTE: This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that as a candidate for the position, you will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date you will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidate must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under the direction of a Supervising Architect, Engineer, or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, is responsible for the development, design, and/or review of the design of buildings and facilities in various building construction programs; does related work as required.
At this level incumbents are recognized as fully equipped by training and experience to be given professional assignments requiring proven professional ability. This is the first level of work involving the full range of professional activity on conventional projects.
Projects assigned are typically broad in scope and require technical judgment to interpret and adapt guidelines. Assignments are screened to eliminate most of those involving unusual or unique features or the supervisor provides assistance on such assignments.
Occasionally, employees are assigned to work on more complicated or unusual problems than are typical of this level, in such cases, they are under the direct supervision of a higher level professional architect.
Employees are expected to proceed independently in gathering information, and to use skill and ingenuity in working out problems; their supervisors assign work and supply general instructions.
They observe the work for progress, check adherence to completion and cost schedules, coordinate it with other work under way, and review it upon completion for technical adequacy and for compliance with project design requirements, office policies, and standards.
Some typical examples of assignments at this level involve developing tentative and diagrammatic sketches for projects of average difficulty characterized by standardized architectural elements, singleness of purpose, or not involving unique or specialized functions; developing general cost figures for a project of some size and scope from tentative plans and functional requirements, based on cost data for similar structures; integrating into final detailed
specifications, specifications prepared by others covering architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical materials, equipment, and installation instructions for "standard type" storehouses, buildings, and other projects of a similar nature; making measured drawings of existing structural conditions and of design features, detailed drawings of stabilization methods calculated to insure preservation of original structures, and designs of details to be reconstructed or restored reflecting the spirit, character, and period of individual historic structures.
Architects at this level contact other professionals in their own and other agencies, contractors, and local officials to cooperate with them in solving common problems and developing architectural features. Some contacts with contract architect engineers and others outside their organization are carried on without supervision. However, usually these assignments are of a regular or recurring nature and in these circumstances employees are usually operating within a limiting set of instructions. They attend and participate in conferences as representatives of their immediate organizational unit and report back on what took place.
Supervision of others in not a significant factor. However incumbents occasionally are required to check and coordinate the work of lower grade professionals, technicians, or clerical employees.
At this level, recommendations and decisions are an inherent part of the process of carrying assigned projects to completion.
Two (2) years of professional experience in the design of large and varied types of buildings and the preparation of architectural plans, drawings, and specifications therefore.
Possession of a valid license as an Architect issued by the New Jersey State Board of Architects.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
From rough sketches, verbal information, and field observations, designs and lays out plans, elevations, and sections for buildings, developing them from sketch form to working drawings.
Develops complete details of various parts of the buildings to help the draftsman, estimators, inspectors, and contractors. Handles relations and negotiations.
Prepares drawings and specifications.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of the following:
Knowledge of the science and art of architecture.
Knowledge of the principles and procedures to be observed in determining the design of buildings of varied types.
Knowledge of the technological developments in the field of architecture relating to efficient and economical types of buildings.
Knowledge of the means of obtaining needed information from superintendents and their assistants in order to determine how architectural principles can be applied so as to serve their needs.
Knowledge of the preparation of detailed drawings for the information of draftsman, estimators, inspectors, and contractors.
Knowledge of architectural equipment, materials, and supplies, and their purchase, storage, and use, and of the establishment and maintenance of needed records and files.
Ability to design varied types of buildings from rough sketches, verbal information and field observations so as to assure compliance with architectural principles and produce types of structures that make for safe, economical, and efficient operation.
Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of detailed plans, drawings, and specifications from the designs.
Ability to prepare detailed drawings for the information and use of estimators, inspectors, and contractors.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates, superintendents, and their assistants, and others concerned with the design and construction of buildings.
Ability to make proper use of architectural equipment, materials, and supplies, and to establish and maintain needed records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
