Cafeteria Monitor

PURPOSE: This position is a highly visible one and is responsible for monitoring student behavior during meal service. The cafeteria monitor will assist with the cleanliness of the cafeteria and assist with the flow of meal service.


  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/College Degree preferred
  • Must be self-motivating and able to work efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work well and handle stress-related situations in a positive, professional manner.

  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4
  • Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities, with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3- 4A.4.
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education. During the initial six-month period provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.


  • Manages students during meal service (behavior problems will be referred to the teacher or principal according to guidelines established by the district.
  • Communicates with students and school staff in a positive and professional manner utilizing appropriate customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Monitors student behavior by circulating and interacting with students during meals; encouraging students to wait in line in an orderly fashion; encouraging students to focus on eating and not talking; encouraging students to pick up their trash; encouraging students to leave the cafeteria in an orderly fashion.
  • Assists with the cleanliness of the cafeteria.
  • Dismisses classes in an orderly manner at the scheduled time.
  • Encourage good table manners.
  • Monitors students as they use the trash cans.
  • Participates in training sessions, meetings, and scheduled cleaning days as requested.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, his/her designee, or other appropriate Building/District Administrators.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a 10-month part-time position that is annually renewable in accordance to NHCCS approved policies and procedures. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as duties demand.

HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT: Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 8:45 am and 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. There is an unpaid break from 8:45 am - 10:00 am.

COMPENSATION: $12.00 an hour 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Chief School Administrator or designee in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy.
