Description

Position Purpose

The Elementary English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher provides instructional support and language development services to English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K–5. The ESL teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, intervention staff, school leaders and families to ensure students develop English proficiency while achieving academic success aligned with New Jersey Student Learning Standards and WIDA English Language Development Standards.

The ESL Teacher reports to the School Principal and/or Supervisor of World Languages. Start date: 11/2/2026

Key Functions

  • Provide direct ESL instruction to elementary English Language Learners through push-in, pull-out, individualized and small-group instruction models.
  • Develop and administer curriculum consistent with district goals, objectives and state standards.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that support language acquisition in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences that maximize instructional time and student participation.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive and conducive to learning for all students.
  • Implement differentiated instructional strategies and sheltered instruction techniques to support multilingual learners.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student learning and modify instructional methods to meet individual student needs, including students with special needs.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to support differentiated instruction and academic achievement.
  • Administer WIDA ACCESS, WIDA Screener and other standardized assessments in accordance with district and state guidelines.
  • Follow New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and ESSA guidelines for identification, placement, monitoring, assessment and exciting aspects of ESL students.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, language development and assessment data.
  • Organize, maintain, while ensuring complete and accurate records for grading, reporting and compliance purposes in accordance with district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Support the academic, social, emotional and cultural development of students.
  • Instruct students in responsible citizenship, appropriate behavior and school expectations.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior necessary to create a positive and productive learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians and colleagues regarding student progress and instructional goals.
  • Encourage and promote parental involvement in students’ education.
  • Participate in parent conferences, Child Study Team meetings, faculty meetings, professional learning communities and school committees as required.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, interventionists, specialists and administrators to evaluate curriculum and student progress.
  • Select appropriate instructional materials, books, technology and classroom resources in collaboration with administration.
  • Maintain inventory records of instructional materials and classroom supplies.
  • Supervise students during classroom and school-related activities, including transitions, transportation, lunch, recess and other assigned duties.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including seminars, workshops, conferences and educational research.
  • Demonstrate cultural responsiveness, professionalism, flexibility and commitment to equity in education.
