General Description: The ESL Teacher will provide educational instruction to foster English proficiency, academic learning and personal growth.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provide opportunities for individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Sets specific objectives in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
- Devises written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts.
- Maintains records of pupils; educational progress in class record books and/or board approved forms and summarizes these marks for reporting purposes.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning for ESL students.
- Works to achieve the New Jersey Student Learning Standards district goals and objectives by promoting active learning in the classroom using board-adopted curriculum and other appropriate learning activities for ESL students.
- Identifies academic and support services needs of limited English proficient pupils and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
- Work collaboratively with administrators and support staff to align instructional practices and resources.
- Participates in the assessment of the English proficiency of pupils whose native language is other than English; helps to identify pupils eligible for English as a Second Language programs or other services designed to improve English language proficiency.
- Assess pupil academic progress, English proficiency and personal growth toward state objectives of instruction. Assesses annually to determine pupils ready to exit the ESL program.
- Budgets class time effectively.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with network policies.
- Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate school personnel immediately or as soon as reasonably possible.
- Implement instruction and maintain an environment that recognizes and values diverse populations
- Assume other related responsibilities and duties within the context of the above major responsibilities and or illustrations of key duties as directed by school administration, central office, or the Board of Trustees
Requirements and Qualifications
- Knowledge of New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS)
- Knowledge of the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework.
- Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program, discuss pupil progress and encourage their involvement in the development and review of program objectives
- Knowledge of assigned area content and content related pedagogy
- Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities
- Ability to create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students.
- Participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school systems groups.
- Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.
- Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
- Notifies the school principal promptly with information relevant to orderly district operations, such as observations about gang activity, signs of student depression, or signs of child abuse.
- Ability to work on site during hours required.
- Duties may require working outside of instructional hours/extended hours.
- Effectively utilize all technologies.
- Maintain a working relationship with all members of the faculty and other personnel assigned to the school
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, preferred.
- Ability to function effectively in a diverse school environment
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate or acceptable.
Salary/Schedule: Salary is determined upon experience and qualification. This is a full-time, 10-month contract position.
Education/Experience: · Bachelor’s Degree required.
Must hold New Jersey Department of Education Teacher of English as a Second Language.
Candidates must be able to pass required criminal background check and provide proof of citizenship or legal status.
