Description

The Oxford Township School District is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and proactive Buildings and Grounds Supervisor to oversee the comprehensive maintenance, operation, and safety of all district facilities and grounds. This hands-on leadership role requires a self-starter who excels at anticipating needs, leading staff, ensuring compliance, and maintaining a healthy, safe, and efficient educational environment for our students, staff, and community.

Core Responsibilities & Expectations

The successful candidate will provide both hands-on expertise and effective supervision across the following key areas:

  • Proactive Facilities Leadership: Serve as the hands-on working supervisor, personally performing maintenance, repairs, and custodial tasks while providing effective leadership and training for all facilities staff (custodial, maintenance, grounds). Proactively identify and resolve facility issues before they become urgent problems, demonstrating continuous improvement.
  • Planning & Project Management: Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive annual and multi-year maintenance and capital improvement plans, including detailed preventive maintenance schedules and extensive summer work programs. Oversee and inspect work performed by outside contractors.
  • Staff Supervision & Accountability: Recruit, train, assign, and supervise all departmental staff. Develop, enforce, and maintain daily custodial and grounds schedules, and hold staff accountable to high performance and safety standards.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local safety, health, and environmental regulations (e.g., PEOSHA, Right-to-Know, fire/safety laws). Monitor and regulate critical building systems (HVAC, fire alarms, electrical).
  • Emergency & After-Hours Response: Willingness to maintain 24/7 on-call availability to immediately respond to facility emergencies, alarm calls, security breaches, heating/cooling failures, and urgent needs, including managing timely snow and ice removal operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification/Licensure:
    • Educational Facilities Manager Certificate (CEFM) REQUIRED. (Note: Consideration may be given to candidates who agree to obtain the CEFM within a specified timeframe, per Board policy.)
    • Fireman's Black Seal License (Low Pressure Boiler License) REQUIRED.
  • Experience & Skills:
    • Minimum experience in plant operation and maintenance, school or plant maintenance, or a skilled trade, as determined by the Board.
    • Demonstrated hands-on experience in building maintenance, repair (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry), and custodial operations.
    • Proven ability to supervise and coordinate staff activities effectively, including the ability to make difficult staffing decisions.
    • Thorough knowledge of fire/safety laws, building maintenance, and the proper handling/storage of hazardous materials.
  • General Requirements:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Valid New Jersey Driver's License.
    • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
    • Physical ability to perform manual labor and demanding maintenance tasks (e.g., prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50-75 lbs, climbing, working in varying weather conditions).
    • Current residency in New Jersey, or willingness to obtain residency within one year of employment (per N.J.S.A. 52:14-7).

Terms of Employment

  • Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
  • This is an exempt position requiring availability and responsiveness outside of standard business hours (nights, weekends, holidays) for emergencies, snow removal, and other urgent needs. Compensation for this required availability is factored into the salary.
  • Reports directly to the School Business Administrator.
  • Performance will be evaluated annually.
