TITLE: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER

 

REPORTS TO: Principal/Director of Curriculum and Instruction/Superintendent of Schools

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Valid New Jersey Instructional Teacher of English as a Second Language Certificate.
  2. Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  4. Required: Criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

 

JOB GOAL: The primary responsibility is to lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual and psychological growth and maturation within the limits of the resources provided by the district. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Teacher/Pupil Relationships 
    1. The teacher identifies and provides for individual differences and the needs of pupils. Student achievement is the responsibility of the teacher, consistent with the individual potential of each student.
    2. The teacher shows genuine interest and understanding for the pupil’s intellectual, emotional, familial, social, moral, and physical developments as they affect pupil performance.
    3. The teacher will be effective with pupils of varied abilities. 
    4. The teacher encourages pupils to improve their learning skills.
    5. The teacher encourages pupils to take pride in themselves, their school, and their community.
       
  2. Teacher Preparation 
    1. The teacher plans goals and objectives for each class.
    2. The teacher diagnoses the needs of each class and plans learning activities accordingly. 
    3. The teacher allows for relevant contributions from students when choosing and organizing appropriate learning activities.
    4. The teacher explores relevant community resources.
       
  3. Teaching Procedures 
    1. The teacher conducts classes with necessary poise and appropriate, professional behavior.
    2. The teacher employs instructional methods, materials, and resources that are appropriate and available for executing class activities effectively. 
    3. The teacher establishes a positive atmosphere where there is respect for the creative ideas of students. 
       
  4. Evaluation 
    1. Pupil 
      1. The teacher is responsible for student and class achievement.
      2. The teacher maintains active records that provide evidence of pupil assessment, growth, and achievement.
      3. The teacher maintains a systematic and fair evaluation method of procedure. 
      4. As outlined by the district, the teacher will provide students and parents with periodic progress and evaluative information.
         
    2. Teacher 
      1. The teacher consults with his/her supervisor as needed and/or requested.
         
    3. Professional Functions 
      1. The teacher is responsible for being in attendance for their position as required by the negotiated agreement.
      2. The teacher is prompt and accurate in completing reports and reasonable requests for information.
      3. The teacher will provide appropriate plans for substitutes and report on the substitute’s performance accordingly. 
         
    4. Professional Involvement 
      1. The teacher keeps abreast of the current educational methods and procedures. Including, but not limited to; involvement in school visitations, conferences, professional meetings, committee work, in-service organizations, etc.
      2. The teacher works cooperatively with other professionals in the development and implementation of curricula and instructional programs as time is made available. 
         
    5. Professional Qualities 
      1. Parent/Community Relations 
        1. The teacher establishes a cooperative working relationship with parents based on mutual respect.
           
      2. Personal Qualities 
        1. The teacher is receptive to new methods and procedures.
        2. The teacher provides recognition for the contribution of others in the school community as necessary.
           
    6. Other 
      1. The teacher shall be responsible for other duties assigned by the building principal and inclusive of the contract agreement, but not restricted thereof.
