DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. Possess or be eligible for valid NJ certification as a Principal or School Administrator.
  2. Three to five years of experience in a related field of special education.
  3. Previous successful supervisory and administrative experience.
  4. Demonstrated ability to develop staff utilizing the district approved evaluation model. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to deliver professional development in an effective manner.
  6. Strong analytical, communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
  7. Possess organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records, meet deadlines and communicate effectively.
  8. Alternative qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate (with the exception of the appropriate certification).
 
REPORTS TO:  Assistant Superintendent
JOB GOALS:  To serve as an advocate for all children, ensuring the effective implementation of N.J.A.C. 6A:14.
 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  1. Coordinate all special education and remedial programs at the elementary level.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate PRIDE curricula.
  3. Provide in-service training to teachers and support staff at the elementary level.
  4. Design, implement and evaluate a professional development plan for the elementary special education staff.
  5. Contribute to the development of a budget for special education.
  6. Observe and evaluate all assigned staff to ensure an individualized, differentiated, and instructionally sound implementation of the district’s curricula for students with disabilities. 
  7. Keep informed of legal requirements governing special education.
  8. Assist in recruiting, selecting, hiring and retaining of special education staff.
  9. Develop clear and informative school quality reporting metrics to share reports regularly with appropriate stakeholders that will generate discussions for data driven decisions about curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices that improve student achievement.
  10. Collaborate with administrators and special education staff in matters essential to elementary students with special needs.
  11. Maintain program coordination and program articulation across the elementary schools and among other disciplines.
  12. Conduct program needs assessment on a regular basis.
  13. Ensure the utilization of multiple measures to assess the efficacy of instructional methodologies in the education of students with disabilities.
  14. Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining and filing of all reports and records legally required or administratively useful.
  15. Maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
  16. Represent the district at appropriate cooperative, County and State meetings.
  17. Administer and supervise all aspects of Chapter 192-193 services to non-public schools.
  18. Develop and submit grants in the areas of Special Education.
  19. Serve as the Principal of the Extended School Year (ESY) Program.
 
This position will also be responsible for all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:      
 
This is a twelve month position which includes some evening, weekend, and summer work with compensation to be negotiated with the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
 
EVALUATION:       
 
The performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation.
