REPORTING RESPONSIBILITY:
The Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant is directly responsible to the Supervisor of Pupil Services and the building principal(s) and through them to the Director of Student Personnel Services.
JOB GOAL:
The Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant conducts educational assessments of children with learning problems and consults with other staff members and parents/guardians in order to provide such children with appropriate instruction. In carrying-out this function the Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant works cooperatively with such personnel as principals, district supervisors and teachers.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month contract consistent with the agreement negotiated with the applicable bargaining unit.
PERSONAL EVALUATION:
Based on the performance of responsibilities identified in this position description and the criteria and procedures in the applicable evaluation policy. See Policy 4118, Evaluation of Tenured Teaching Staff Members and 4119, Evaluation of Non-Tenured Teaching Staff members.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Specific Responsibilities
1. Serves as an active member of the child study team, to conduct educational assessments of children, write reports, IEP’s and educational prescriptions.
2. Consults with the psychologist, social workers, teacher, counselor and staff to facilitate an understanding of the educational abilities and limitations of pupils.
3. Conducts demonstration teaching sessions with individuals and groups. Provides instruction to students and aids students in solving problems of organizing school work, scheduling, improving relationships with teachers and modifying other areas related to school learning.
4. Monitors mainstream programs and support programs such as supplemental instruction; resource room instruction and continually checks on the appropriateness of the education plan.
5. Completes follow-up evaluations on children receiving supplemental instruction or resource room programs.
6. Works with parents/guardians to fully explain the educational assessment and programs specified.
7. Works cooperatively with principals to facilitate implementation of educational programs for children within the schools.
8. Makes recommendations regarding curriculum, programs and student schedules.
9. Orders educational materials, tests and supplies.
10. Carries out other duties consistent with periodic changes in state and local regulations pertaining to pupils with educational disabilities.
B. General Professional Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of English by communicating with reasonable clarity, conciseness and precision in both speaking and writing.
2. Participates in solving classroom and school problems and seeks resolutions through appropriate channels.
3. Cooperates in the total school program by:
a. Sharing responsibility for care of materials, equipment and facilities;
b. Sharing responsibility for students’ behavior throughout the building;
c. Working with colleagues to improve the effectiveness of the total school program;
d. Participating in school activities.
4. Cooperates in curriculum development and evaluation activities a by participating in the planning and implementation of programs.
5. Establishes and follows an individual program of professional renewal in such areas as:
a. How children learn;
b. Current approaches to discipline;
c. Alternative instructional strategies;
d. Updated curriculum materials;
e. Current theory and practice in his/her field
C. Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs other duties and responsibilities incidental to the office or as assigned by the Supervisor of Pupil Services and/or the building principal(s).
