Ranney School seeks an Upper School English Teacher for the 2025 - 2026 School Year. Ranney offers core English courses in Grade 9 (a genre study) and Grade 10 (American Literature) before students in Grades 11 and 12 choose semester electives or AP English courses.
Through building communication skills in reading, writing, and discussion, the English Department’s focus is to cultivate curiosity, elevate empathy, and always celebrate critical thinking.
The ideal candidate:
- will have an advanced degree in English, English education, or a related field and experience teaching high school
- will be enthusiastic about teaching both literary analysis and rhetoric toward meaningful, relevant, and high academic standards
- will be as adept at teaching ninth-grade, reluctant readers as they are twelfth-grade elite AP Literature students
- will have a growth mindset both personally and professionally
- will foster collegial interactions with one’s peers and kind, positive, productive interactions with students and parents
- may have the expertise and flexibility to teach in other humanities disciplines, most notably History and/or French

- Teach five sections of Upper School English
- Mentor students in advisory and co-curricular activities, participate in division and department meetings, and serve in various supervisory roles.
- Facilitate an offering in the Upper School’s “Maymester” program, an experiential education program that takes place over the last two weeks of the school year.
