Are you looking for a summer job? Do you enjoy working with children of all ages? If so, we have many positions available to consider.

The JCC of Central NJ seeks spirited and compassionate college students or graduates to work at Camp Yachad as full-time shadow counselors. Shadow counselors work 1 on 1 with a camper with special needs between 24 months to 8th grade. For the past 20 years, the Camp Yachad Shadow Program has provided 30+ campers each year with disabilities individualized supports so they can be seamlessly integrated into a camp group with their typical peers.

Although shadow counselors interact with all campers in the group, they are responsible for the care and well-being of their assigned camper. As a recreational summer program, our top priority is supporting camper socialization and independence. A successful shadow counselor is one who can assist their camper discreetly and blend into the group!

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in all staff trainings before and during the camp season
  • Complete weekly camper contact form
  • Provide 1 to 1 support for assigned camper during all activities including, but not limited to, swim, meals and with self-care
  • Implement accommodations and modifications so camper can participate to the best of their ability
  • Encourage camper participation, socialization and build independence in skills
  • Responsible for overall safety and well-being of camper
  • Maintain required safety and hygiene practices related to COVID-19
  • Attend all pre-camp staff trainings
  • Program hours: 8:30am-1pm, 8:00am-2:30pm, or 8:00am-4:30pm; weeks and hours of employment are dependent on camper enrollment and will be determined prior to hire
