Job Description:

The Special Education teacher is responsible for curriculum and lesson planning and delivery, as well as assessing students and writing effective IEPs.  Participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, PPTs, and parent meetings is an essential component of this position.  He/she must be skilled in providing on-going collaboration with general educators in order to implement IEPs with fidelity.

Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers to develop research-based, instructional practices that support the development of student’s on Individual Education Plans, specifically in early literacy and mathematical background knowledge and concept development.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to monitor, evaluate, and document student progress.
  • Provide inclusion and pull-out support for students with IEPs.
  • Assists with modifications of tests and quizzes. Informs general education teachers about modifications.
  • Meet with teachers and parents both formally and informally, to communicate student progress.
  • Attend grade level meetings.
  • Prepare detailed lesson plans in advance and submit them to administrators for approval
  • Participate in IEP (individual education plan) meetings as scheduled by the school
  • Use individualized reinforcement techniques to keep each student on the path toward greatness
  • Invite family members to participate in each student’s educational progress
  • Create and distribute progress reports quarterly
  • Confer with on-site therapist over disciplinary and behavioral issues with students
  • Create a safe, productive classroom environment

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred.


NJ State Teachers of Student with Disabilities Certificate with co- NJ State Standard P-3 or K-6 Teaching Certificate
