Purpose/Scope of Responsibility

The Assistant Director of JCC Camp Ruach will report to the Camp Director. The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and have prior camp experience and experience with youth and/or teens. The Assistant Director should demonstrate creativity, professionalism, and willingness to jump in and support all aspects of camp to ensure an amazing day camp program. JCC Camp Ruach is a 9-week day camp in Bridgewater, NJ currently serving over 575 campers ranging in age from 2 years old through entering grade 9 with nearly 150 staff ranging in age from teenagers to adults. Full Time Position. September-May: Sunday-Thursday; June-August: Monday-Friday. This includes evening hours as needed. Options for part-time position available. Must inquire for more information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Assist and work in partnership with the camp director on all aspects of camp visioning, planning, implementation, management, and oversight
  • Positively support camp, camper recruitment, and family engagement by planning and attending all camp open houses, conducting camp tours, parent orientations, visiting days, and special events – both pre-camp and during the camp season
  • Work to maintain a positive, safe, and fun camp environment
  • Exercise exceptional judgement in regards to policies, procedures, and well-being of all children and staff
  • Maintain positive and solution focused mindset and attitude in all aspects of camp planning and implementation
  • Plan and book all trips and outside vendors for various events and programs for camp season and post-camp
  • Sit on camp committee with Camp Director and members of the community and help create an ever growing and competitive camp program


  • Establish positive and collaborative working relationship with all members of year-round camp staff and senior camp staff team
  • Assist and provide direct support to all camp personnel and staff in any and all capacities during the camp season
  • Create and manage online social media presence on camp pages with goal of engaging parents, campers, and staff and promoting camp recruitment
  • Manage all online seasonal camp job postings and coordination of publicizing camp jobs to local institutions
  • Assist Camp Director in conducting staff interviews and oversee the official hire process
  • Work with Camp Director to design, plan, and run staff orientation (both pre-camp and during camp season)
  • Provide direct and timely feedback and support to all camp staff in a constructive manner
  • Work closely with and provide direct support and assistance to Program Coordinator and Specialist Supervisor prior to and during camp season on camp programming, electives, theme, and Specialty Fridays and to Unit Heads on all trips and special events
  • Serve as role model, positive influence, and support system to all members of the camp team to ensure all staff feel supported, valued, and respected
  • Oversee and supervise travel camp unit head on all aspects including but not limited to trip logistics, camper behavior, and parent communication

Customer Service & Communication

  • Handle difficult or emotional customer situations in calm and respectful manner
  • Respond promptly to customer needs
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy of sensitive issues
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with the camp director to ensure constant lines of open communication
  • Draft and send regular weekly emails to all camp families
  • Open minded to working with all types of campers and families

JCC Sports Coordination

  • Oversee gym rentals, contracts, promoting and outreach to additional rentals
  • Manage gym schedule
  • Create, organize, and implement all sports leagues, clinics, and classes
  • Create new sports programs for youth, teens, and adults
  • Teach JCrew and Preschool Sports Classes

Overall JCC Duties

  • Support the mission of the JCC and Camp Ruach
  • Represent and promote JCC and Camp Ruach at community-wide events, programs, and open-houses, including those that fall on evenings and weekends throughout the year
  • Work with members and clients of the JCC to ensure happiness and ease concerns
  • Attend JCC board meetings as needed and attend regular staff and program meetings
  • Participation in training seminars and webinars, as assigned

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in related field
  • Proven experience in camp or youth programs
  • Works well in a team as well as independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with supervision of others
  • Ability to plan, originate, organize, and carry out daily and special programs
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to adapt with frequent change, delays, and unexpected events
  • Sense of humor, desire to have fun, and love of camp!
