Job Title
ESL Teacher (Grades 3-8)
Salary Range
$59,871 - $80,821 (Depending upon experience; $2,000 sign on bonus)
Reports To
Head of School and Vice Principal
Responsibilities and Duties
Lesson Planning and Instruction
- Develops and implements lesson plans that align with state standards and the school’s curriculum, designed to enhance English language proficiency for multilingual learners.
- Utilizes various teaching methodologies, including sheltered instruction and differentiated learning strategies, to support students at varying levels of English proficiency.
- Designs engaging classroom activities to build students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.
- Adapts curriculum to meet the linguistic, cultural, and academic needs of individual students.
- Integrates ethical discussions, cultural awareness, and social justice themes into lesson plans.
- Incorporates at least one Civic Literacy or Community Service Project per school year.
Student Engagement and Assessment
- Monitors student progress in English language acquisition and academic performance.
- Develops and administers both formative and summative assessments to measure student growth and proficiency.
- Maintains accurate records of student progress and provides regular feedback to students and parents.
- Identifies student learning needs and provides appropriate interventions, including small-group instruction and individualized support.
- Creates a supportive and structured classroom environment that fosters student participation and language development.
Parent and Community Collaboration
- Communicates with parents and guardians regularly to discuss student progress, goals, and strategies for supporting English language development at home.
- Encourages parental involvement in student learning and school activities.
- Leverages community resources and cultural programs to enhance students' language learning experiences.
Professional Development and School Engagement
- Collaborates with general education teachers to support ESL students in mainstream classrooms.
- Participates in faculty meetings, school committees, and curriculum planning initiatives.
- Pursues continuous professional development in ESL education, second language acquisition, and best teaching practices.
- Implements strategies and feedback provided by Professors-in-Residence and school leadership.
Supervision
- Supervises students during instructional time, ensuring a structured and engaging learning environment.
- May oversee student teachers, classroom aides, and interns when assigned.
Other Responsibilities
- Upholds and enforces school policies, administrative regulations, and ethical standards.
- Performs additional duties as assigned within the scope of employment.
Qualifications
- Education: BA or MA (or higher) in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
- Certification: ESL or Bilingual/ESL certification as required by the State of New Jersey and/or the U.S.
- Priority will be given to candidates who hold ESL certifications or are actively pursuing one.
- Experience working with multilingual learners in an elementary or middle school setting preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
