QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid New Jersey Teaching Certification English as a Second Language ESL (1475)
- Valid New Jersey instructional certificate with an endorsement for the appropriate grade level and/or academic content area
- Demonstrates strong skills in the areas of evidence-based instruction strategies, Tier 2 interventions, and social and emotional learning.
- Strong knowledge of New Jersey Learning Standards (NJSLS)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship.
- Pass a physical examination in accordance with statute and board policy.

POSITION GOALS:
The English Language Arts Intervention Specialist/ English as a Second Language (ESL Teacher) is a teacher who works specifically with students who require strategic and intensive intervention. The focus of the intervention specialist is to develop a student-centered system of intervention that effectively works to close the achievement gap in reading and writing.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assessment/Evaluation
Identifies students with substantial academic deficiencies by evaluation of available test and observational data, by consultation with staff members, and by recommendations made by other personnel.
Uses appropriate standardized test instruments, informal diagnostic tasks, and observations to assess the academic strengths and weaknesses of students referred for services.
Instructional Planning
Develops instructional goals and specific instructional objectives for each student selected for remedial teaching with I&RS team and classroom teacher.
Selects appropriate instructional materials and media to achieve the goals and objectives specified for each student under his/her care.
In cooperation with the building principal and classroom teacher, properly group students for remedial instruction after consideration of the learning style and level of academic functioning of each student.
Participates in educational plan preparation for children referred to the Child Study Team.
Participates with other staff members in curriculum planning during designated meetings.
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect supplies, equipment, materials, and facilities needed to implement the planned instructional program.
Teach content and skills in English language, literature, and composition, as well as in reading, to middle students, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
Collaborates well with colleagues of diverse backgrounds on pedagogical approaches, curricular alignment, and instructional strategies.
Deliver lessons using various differentiated instructional techniques that are appropriate to the academic level and meet the diverse needs of students.
Teach grammar and syntax, vocabulary and word usage, and other principles of the English language.
Develop students' verbal skills, including reading out loud, discussion, and debate, develop students' writing skills and encourage the development of critical thinking skills.
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents.
Demonstrates professional behavior, including discretion, judgment, and integrity.
Participation in collaborative grade level meetings to assist in analyzing and utilizing assessment data to improve the focus of instructional planning and student achievement.
Meets regularly with the coach and/ or principal to review benchmarks and establish data points to assess student progress toward set instructional goals.
Prepare forms, records, and reports as directed.
Attends PLC meetings and professional training as directed.
Participate in school improvement activities as provided in the school’s School Improvement Plan.
Performs other duties which may be within the scope of his/her employment and certifications as may be assigned by the administration under the authority of the Board of Education.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten months per year
Salary is to be determined by the Board of Education negotiation process. The performance of this job will be evaluated annually by state law and provisions of the board's policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
