Elementary/Middle School Music Teacher

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid New Jersey Teaching Certification- Music Teacher Certificate of Eligibility or Music Standard Certificate (Code 2100)
  2. Strong knowledge of New Jersey Learning Standards (NJSLS) and New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Visual and Performing Arts
  3. Experience with integrating Restorative Practices and PBSIS.
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  5. A criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship are required.
  6. Pass a physical examination in accordance with statute and board policy.

 

 

Job Goal:                   To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instructional music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.                             

 

Reports to:                 Principal

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

     

  • Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and/or choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to pupils. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

 

  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

 

  • Plan a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

 

  • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

 

  • Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.

 

  • Control the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

 

  • Establish and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.

 

  • Communicate with homeroom teacher and site administrator on individual student’s progress.

 

  • Identify student needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Evaluate each student’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

 

  • Plan, rehearse, and direct students in musical programs for school and community.

 

  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss student progress.

 

  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned school day.

 

  • Participate in curriculum development activities, faculty meetings and school-level planning.

 

  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.

 

  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

 

  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

 

  • Perform other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as many, from time to time as assigned by the administrator.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Ten months per year

 

Salary to be determined by the Board of Education negotiation process. The performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and provisions of the board's policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
