JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

TITLE: Speech and Language Therapist/Pathologist

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.      Valid New Jersey Speech Language Specialist Certificate (3462)

2.      Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) preferred.

  1. Member of the American Speech and Language Association (ASHA)
  2. Analyze data to address concerns and track progress.
  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship.
  5. Pass a physical examination in accordance with statute and board policy.

 

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services

 

 

POSITION GOALS: 

 

To help diagnose, reduce, or eliminate speech and language disorders that negatively impact the student’s educational performance. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in children.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides screening to identify students with potential articulation delays/disorders.

Provides a thorough assessment and diagnostic report of speech and language impairments.

Provides direct therapy to meet the individual needs of students with speech and language impairments.

Conducts comprehensive evaluations and completes progress reports. 

Participates in developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), including measurable goals and objectives for each student’s needs as applicable to the educational setting.

Identifies/selects appropriate materials and equipment for therapy. 

Establishes schedules for therapy sessions. 

Establishes and maintains effective and efficient record-keeping procedures.

Provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals with severe expressive and/or language comprehension disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder or progressive neurological disorders.

Maintains accurate daily records and data collection to document students’ attendance, and progress, including requirements for Medicaid. 

Manages time, materials, and equipment effectively.

Establishes and maintains a positive, organized, and safe environment for students. 

Uses technology resources effectively. 

Participates in all pre-referral and referral procedures as required by the district. 

Case manages students classified as Eligible for Speech/Language Services (ESLS).

Attends meetings for students classified as ESLS and those receiving special education services where Speech and Language services are required.

Re-evaluates short-term objectives and writes new ones as needed. 

Uses standardized instruments, clinical judgment, and teacher-parent input to screen, evaluate, and reassess students’ needs.

Consults with teachers, parents, and other IEP committee members to ensure that students’ needs are being met.

Participates in training sessions, conferences, and workshops to keep abreast of current practices, programs, and legal issues while maintaining professional certification and/or licensure.

Promotes and supports the professional growth of self and others. 

Keeps well-informed about current trends and best practices in the area of Speech Language Pathology. 

Maintains a network of peer contacts through professional organization. 

Models professional and ethical conduct at all times. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Salary is to be determined by the Board of Education negotiation process. The performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and provisions of the board's policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
